Project Overview: Stock Pitch

A big part of fintech is taking data about a company and being able to determine whether or not that company would be a good option to invest in or not. This semester project will be exactly that: choose a company or industry of interest and run different types of analyses to culminate in a stock pitch telling us to invest in or short the company.

Objectives

  1. Understand the process of analyzing a company/industry with respect to a pitch

  2. Have knowledge of different types of financial and technical analyses to add evidence to a pitch

  3. Being able to convey your findings in a clear and concise way

Your Task

  1. As a team (in your lab group) choose a company or industry you're interested in

  2. Create a comparative company analysis spreadsheet to evaluate your chosen company against similar ones or determine which company in your chosen industry would be the best one to look more into (week 2 lab)

  3. Look through the relevant sections (1, 1A, 5, 7, 7A) of the company's 10K to find thesis points, or reasons to invest in the company (week 2 lab)

  4. Run a DCF on the company to get the financial view on projections of stock price depending on market conditions (week 3 lab)

  5. Create data visualizations of the company's past stock price or financial data (week TBD lab)

  6. Create projections of the stock price given past data with machine learning (week TBD lab)

  7. Compile your findings in a presentation to give to the class (week 8 workshop)

Majority of lab times will give you the opportunity to apply what we learn in workshop with your pitch while collaborating with your team members and lab instructor.
